One individual was detained following a reported social media threat; case forwarded to prosecutors for review.
LĪHUʻE — The Kauaʻi Police Department (KPD) is reminding residents that threats of violence involving schools and school-related activities will not be tolerated following an investigation into an alleged threat involving a high school football game.
According to KPD, officers investigated a social media post over the weekend that allegedly threatened to bring a firearm to a high school football game.
Officers contacted those involved in the incident, and one individual was detained. The investigation has since been forwarded to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for review.
Police did not identify the individual involved or specify which high school football game was referenced in the alleged threat.
“KPD will not tolerate threats that put our schools or community at risk. We are committed to thoroughly investigating these reports and pursuing appropriate action, but keeping our community safe also requires everyone to do their part. We urge anyone who becomes aware of a potential threat to speak up and report it to law enforcement,” said Police Chief Rudy Tai.
The department emphasized that threats directed toward students, school personnel or attendees of school-related activities, including athletic events, will be thoroughly investigated.
KPD said it continues to work with school officials and community partners to assess potential threats, share information when appropriate and maintain school safety.
Anyone with information regarding a potential threat to school safety is encouraged to contact KPD’s non-emergency line at (808) 241-1711. In an emergency, call 911.
