WAIMEA, Kauaʻi — The Historic Waimea Theater & Cultural Arts Center is calling on West Kauaʻi residents and the greater island community to lend a helping hand as the landmark prepares for upcoming renovations.
A community cleanup effort is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with volunteers needed to help clear out the theater’s contents and move items to dumpsters to make way for planned county renovations.
Organizers are encouraging anyone who has supported, visited or volunteered at the historic theater over the years to participate in the effort.
“Our beloved Historic Waimea Theater needs our island’s kōkua,” organizers shared in a social media announcement, calling on residents to come together and help prepare the building for its next chapter.
No special skills or previous volunteer experience are required. Participants will primarily assist with carrying and removing items from the building.
Volunteers are welcome to contribute as much time as they can, whether that means helping for an hour, several hours or the entire day.
Lunch will be provided for those participating.
The cleanup comes as the historic theater prepares for renovations following its closure in the aftermath of Hurricane Lowell. The building has faced ongoing concerns involving its roof, drainage and water intrusion.
While a reopening date has not been announced, the upcoming work represents another step toward addressing the theater’s needs.
Community members unable to attend are encouraged to spread the word and invite others to participate.
